Manyara : Tanzania has officially opened the Mamire Gate, a brand-new western entry point to the iconic Tarangire National Park, in a move expected to transform tourism access, stimulate local economies, and create new business opportunities in Babati District, Manyara Region.
The new gate was inaugurated today, April 23, 2026, marking another major milestone in Tanzania’s continued efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure and improve visitor experiences across its world-renowned national parks.
Located strategically on the western side of Tarangire, Mamire Gate is expected to significantly ease travel for tourists coming from the Central Corridor and nearby regions, while also opening up fresh investment opportunities for local communities.
A New Tourism Gateway for Northern and Central Tanzania
Speaking during the official launch ceremony, Senior Assistant Commissioner for Conservation and Head of the Northern Zone, Dr Beatrice Kessy, described the gate as a major catalyst for tourism growth.
According to Dr. Kessy, the new access point will:
- Increase tourism traffic to Tarangire National Park
- Boost revenue collection for conservation and park development
- Create employment opportunities for surrounding communities
- Encourage investment in accommodation, transport, and tourism services
- Improve connectivity between Tanzania’s Northern and Central tourism circuits
She emphasized that the gate will serve as a vital link for tourists traveling from regions such as Dodoma, Singida Region, and Manyara Region, reducing travel time and making the park more accessible than ever before.
Easier Travel with Tanzania’s Modern Transport Network
The opening of Mamire Gate aligns with Tanzania’s growing investment in transport infrastructure.
Tourists traveling from Dar es Salaam can now take advantage of the modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to reach Dodoma and then continue by road through Babati to Tarangire National Park.
Previously, many visitors had to travel via Arusha before entering the park, making journeys longer and less convenient.
This new route is expected to diversify travel itineraries and make safari planning more flexible for both domestic and international tourists.
Government Invests Over TZS 3.9 Billion
Providing details on the project, Conservation Officer and Project Supervisor, Goodluck Busumbila, confirmed that the Government of Tanzania, through the Tanzania National Parks Authority, invested over TZS 3.921 billion in the construction of the gate and associated infrastructure.
The investment demonstrates Tanzania’s commitment to enhancing tourism accessibility while preserving the country’s natural heritage.
New Opportunities for Local Communities
The opening of Mamire Gate is also expected to create ripple effects for communities around Babati and the wider Manyara area.
Local entrepreneurs can benefit through:
- Establishing lodges, camps, and guesthouses
- Offering transport and guiding services
- Selling crafts and cultural tourism experiences
- Supplying agricultural produce to tourism facilities
This development supports Tanzania’s broader strategy of ensuring tourism benefits local communities while promoting conservation.
