KILIMANJARO: Mount Kilimanjaro has once again demonstrated its ability to bring together adventure, faith and international tourism after Catholic priest Fr. João Silveira from Portugal completed a remarkable pilgrimage to Africa’s highest mountain, culminating in the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres above sea level.
The unique pilgrimage combined mountaineering, prayer and Catholic worship, adding a spiritual dimension to the growing range of experiences associated with Mount Kilimanjaro.
Fr. João, a Portuguese-born missionary priest, is known for his work promoting the Traditional Latin Mass in different parts of the world and has undertaken missionary activities in Africa. His connection with Kilimanjaro also extends to an earlier Catholic pilgrimage, having participated in the 2024 Catholic Kilimanjaro pilgrimage.
Eight Days on the Lemosho Route
The 2026 pilgrimage involved an eight-day ascent through the Lemosho Route, one of the mountain's scenic routes, giving the participants an opportunity to combine the physical challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro with prayer and spiritual reflection.
During the ascent, Fr. João reached Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres before continuing towards the summit.
The final stage of the journey took the priest and fellow pilgrims to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest free-standing mountain summit in the world.
At the summit, the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass created a memorable moment that brought together faith and one of Tanzania's most recognisable natural landmarks.
