DODOMA, Tanzania — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism has stepped up preparations for the presentation of its 2026/2027 national budget, signaling a renewed focus on citizen-driven development and sustainable tourism growth.
The preparations are being led by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ashatu Kijaji, who recently chaired a high-level working session in Dodoma, where the ongoing parliamentary budget session is taking place.

Budget to Reflect Citizens’ Needs and Expectations
Dr. Kijaji is expected to present to Parliament the Ministry’s plan and budget estimates, covering projected revenues and expenditures for the upcoming financial year, along with detailed allocations for its institutions.
Speaking during the preparatory meeting, the Minister underscored the importance of aligning the budget with the real needs of Tanzanians.
“It is very important to understand the feelings of our citizens—what they truly need—and plan accordingly to achieve their goals. This means presenting a budget speech that reflects the people’s perspective,” she emphasized.
Her remarks signal a shift toward inclusive and responsive budgeting, ensuring that policies and funding priorities directly benefit communities, especially those dependent on natural resources and tourism.
Performance Accountability and Strategic Priorities
In a move aimed at strengthening accountability and results-based planning, Dr. Kijaji directed all departments, agencies, and units under the ministry to submit:
- Three major achievements successfully implemented during the 2025/2026 financial year
- Three key priority areas for the 2026/2027 financial year that will deliver tangible benefits to citizens
This structured approach is expected to enhance transparency, improve performance tracking, and ensure that public resources are directed toward high-impact initiatives.
Boosting Tourism and Conservation Sectors
The Ministry oversees critical sectors that contribute significantly to Tanzania’s economy, including tourism, wildlife conservation, forestry, and cultural heritage.
The upcoming budget is expected to prioritize:
- Sustainable tourism development
- Conservation of national parks and forest reserves
- Expansion of tourism infrastructure
- Community-based tourism initiatives
- Promotion of Tanzania as a global travel destination
Key attractions under the Ministry’s mandate include:
- Serengeti National Park
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area
- Mount Kilimanjaro
Driving Economic Growth Through Tourism
Tourism remains one of Tanzania’s leading foreign exchange earners, and the 2026/2027 budget is expected to further strengthen the sector’s contribution to national development.
Analysts anticipate increased investment in:
- Marketing and international promotion
- Aviation and connectivity improvements
- Digital tourism platforms
- Skills development in hospitality
By integrating citizen priorities with sector growth strategies, the government aims to create a more inclusive tourism economy that benefits both investors and local communities.
A Budget with a Human Face
As Tanzania prepares for the parliamentary budget presentation, the Ministry’s emphasis on a “citizen-focused budget” reflects a broader commitment to participatory governance and sustainable development.
The upcoming presentation in Parliament is expected to outline a clear roadmap for how natural resources and tourism will continue to drive economic transformation while improving livelihoods across the country.
