In a landmark achievement for East Africa’s tourism industry, Tanzania has officially shattered its previous tourism target, welcoming 5.9 million tourists in 2025, surpassing the earlier national goal of 5 million visitors and setting a strong pace toward an ambitious new target of 8 million tourists by 2030.
The announcement was made in Arusha on April 19, 2026, by Ashatu Kijaji, Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, during the official unveiling of the government’s new tourism growth campaign branded ATM2030.
What Does ATM2030 Mean?
Minister Kijaji revealed that the mystery behind the campaign name ATM2030 symbolizes Tanzania’s renewed tourism vision:
- AT stands for “Eight”
- M represents Million Tourists
- 2030 marks the target year to achieve this milestone
Together, ATM2030 represents Tanzania’s strategic mission to attract 8 million international tourists by the year 2030, in line with the directives of the ruling party’s development manifesto and the country’s long-term economic agenda.
Speaking at the event, Minister Kijaji emphasized that Tanzania has already exceeded expectations.
“We have broken the previous manifesto target of 5 million tourists. With these latest figures, it means the journey toward the new 8 million target has started strongly after surpassing the former goal,” she said.
A Record-Breaking Year for Tanzania Tourism
The newly released figures show that 2025 was a historic year for Tanzania’s tourism sector.
The country not only met but exceeded its original tourism growth target by nearly 900,000 additional visitors, reaching 5.9 million tourists, a major milestone that reflects:
- Strong international demand for Tanzania’s safari and beach experiences
- Successful tourism marketing campaigns in global markets
- Increased international flight connectivity
- Continued investment in tourism infrastructure and hospitality
- Rising interest in Tanzania’s iconic wildlife, cultural heritage, and coastal destinations
This growth positions Tanzania among the fastest-rising tourism destinations in Africa.
Tanzania’s Tourism Boom Driven by World-Class Attractions
Tanzania remains one of Africa’s most diverse tourism destinations, offering unmatched travel experiences including:
- The world-famous Serengeti National Park and the Great Wildebeest Migration
- The majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak
- The wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater
- Pristine beaches in Zanzibar
- Untouched wilderness in Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park
- Rich cultural and historical tourism experiences across the country
With new access routes, improved parks infrastructure, and expanded promotion efforts, the sector is expected to continue its upward trajectory.

Economic Impact of Tourism Growth
Tourism remains one of Tanzania’s top foreign exchange earners and a critical contributor to employment and economic development.
The increase in tourist arrivals is expected to:
- Generate more foreign exchange revenue
- Create jobs across hospitality, transport, and tour operations
- Stimulate investment in hotels, lodges, and tourism services
- Boost local businesses and community-based tourism initiatives
The ATM2030 campaign is therefore not only a tourism target but also a broader economic growth strategy.
Tanzania’s Road to 8 Million Tourists
With 5.9 million tourists already achieved, Tanzania now needs approximately 2.1 million more visitors over the next four years to hit the 8 million target by 2030.
Industry stakeholders are optimistic that with continued collaboration between government, private sector players, and international travel partners, Tanzania can surpass the target even earlier.
As the nation celebrates this record-breaking milestone, the message from Arusha is clear:
Tanzania’s tourism industry is not just growing—it is soaring.
