DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA: A special exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has been officially launched at the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial House in Magomeni, Dar es Salaam, highlighting the historic relationship between Tanzania and Cuba.
The exhibition was launched on August 12, 2026, and will run until August 16, 2026, featuring a collection of photographs documenting the life, leadership and historical legacy of Fidel Castro.
The Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial House, which is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), has provided a significant venue for the commemoration due to the longstanding historical relationship between Fidel Castro and Tanzania's founding President, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
The official guest at the launch was Mama Maria Nyerere, widow of Mwalimu Nyerere. The event was also attended by diplomats, government officials, political representatives and guests from various institutions.
Speaking during the exhibition, Cuban Ambassador to Tanzania Yordenis Despaigne Vera explained that the decision to hold the commemoration at the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial House reflected the strong historical ties between Fidel Castro and Mwalimu Nyerere.
He noted that the two leaders shared a commitment to the liberation of Africa and played important roles in supporting African liberation movements during a significant period in the continent's history.
PRESERVING A SHARED HISTORY
The exhibition provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the life and legacy of Fidel Castro, the history of Mwalimu Nyerere and the wider historical relationship between Cuba and Tanzania.
Beyond commemorating an influential global leader, the exhibition demonstrates the importance of museums and memorial sites in preserving historical memory and creating opportunities for younger generations to understand the events and relationships that shaped Africa and the wider world.
According to Neema Pendeza Mbwana, TANAPA's Coordinator for Antiquities Centres, Tanzanians are encouraged to visit the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial House during the exhibition period to learn more about the historical, cultural and heritage connections between Tanzania and Cuba.
She emphasized that the memorial centre provides an important platform for preserving and sharing Tanzania's national heritage while offering visitors an opportunity to explore significant chapters of the country's history.

The exhibition also highlights the potential of historical and cultural heritage tourism in Tanzania, where memorials, museums and heritage sites provide visitors with experiences beyond traditional wildlife and beach tourism.
