Calving Season in Tanzania is one of the most spectacular wildlife events in Africa. Taking place between January and March, this is when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth on the southern plains of Serengeti National Park.

During this period, nearly 8,000 calves can be born in a single day. The short-grass plains around Ndutu provide nutrient-rich grazing, making it the perfect location for mothers and newborns.

Calving Season offers incredible safari highlights:

  • Massive herds of wildebeest and zebras

  • Adorable newborn calves taking their first steps

  • Intense predator action with lions, cheetahs, and hyenas nearby

  • Dramatic wildlife photography opportunities

The Ndutu area, located between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is the prime location for game drives during this season. Because animals are concentrated in open plains, wildlife viewing is exceptional.

Unlike the river-crossing season, calving season offers easier access to large herds and excellent chances to see predator-prey interactions in action.

This is also considered one of the best times for photographers due to clear skies, lush green landscapes, and active wildlife behavior.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning safari enthusiast, calving season in Tanzania delivers unforgettable moments and breathtaking wildlife scenes.
