KONGWA, Dodoma — Tanzania has taken a significant step in preserving Africa’s liberation history after allocating 424.6 acres of land in Kongwa District for the establishment of a continental heritage centre dedicated to the African freedom struggle.
The announcement was made in Parliament in Dodoma by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, while presenting the ministry’s 2026/2027 budget estimates.
A Continental Vision for Liberation Heritage
The project, to be implemented through the African Liberation Heritage Centre, is expected to evolve into an official institution under the African Union, highlighting its strategic importance not only for Tanzania but for the entire continent.
According to Minister Makonda, the centre will serve as a hub for preserving and promoting Africa’s liberation legacy.
“The centre’s main task is identifying, collecting, preserving and promoting liberation heritage, including documents, photographs, films, speeches by leaders, maps, songs, uniforms and key historical sites,” he said.
Preserving Africa’s Freedom Legacy
The proposed centre will document and safeguard critical elements of Africa’s independence movements, including:
- Historical archives and liberation documents
- Photographs, films, and recorded speeches
- Cultural artifacts such as songs and uniforms
- Maps and strategic records of liberation struggles
- Heritage sites like heroes’ graves and freedom fighters’ camps
Kongwa itself holds historical significance as a former base linked to liberation movements in Southern Africa, making it an ideal location for the project.
Boosting Cultural Tourism in Tanzania
Beyond its historical importance, the centre is expected to become a major cultural tourism attraction, drawing scholars, historians, students, and international visitors interested in Africa’s liberation journey.
The initiative aligns with Tanzania’s broader strategy to diversify tourism offerings by expanding beyond wildlife and beach tourism into heritage and cultural experiences.
Nearby destinations that could benefit from increased visitor traffic include:
- Dodoma City
- Kondoa Rock Art Sites
Economic and Educational Impact
The establishment of the centre is expected to:
- Create employment opportunities in tourism and heritage management
- Promote academic research and knowledge exchange
- Strengthen Tanzania’s role as a custodian of African history
- Encourage intra-African tourism and cultural exchange
It also reinforces Tanzania’s longstanding reputation as a key supporter of liberation movements across the continent.
A Landmark Project for Africa’s Identity
Once completed, the African Liberation Heritage Centre in Kongwa is set to become a symbol of unity, resilience, and shared history for African nations.
By preserving the stories, sacrifices, and achievements of freedom fighters, Tanzania is positioning itself at the heart of Africa’s historical narrative—while unlocking new opportunities in cultural tourism and education.
