Zanzibar has made headlines by hosting one of the largest communal Iftar gatherings ever recorded, an event that underscores the islands’ potential as a leading destination for Halal tourism and faith-based travel experiences.

The historic event took place at the New Amaan Complex Stadium, where more than 15,000 Muslims gathered to break their fast simultaneously during the holy month of Ramadan. As the call to prayer echoed across the stadium, attendees sat shoulder-to-shoulder, dates and water in hand, participating in what officials describe as one of the largest collective Iftar gatherings ever held. The occasion may have even set a world record for the largest simultaneous breaking of fast.

Zanzibar President Alhaj Hussein Mwinyi described the event as the first National Iftar of this scale, highlighting its role in fostering unity, compassion, and solidarity among Zanzibaris. “This gathering is a good deed with great reward before Almighty God. It is also an important platform that unites Muslims and all citizens in strengthening solidarity, love, and national unity,” he said.

The President emphasized that such gatherings encourage charitable acts, prayers, and social cohesion during Ramadan, while providing an opportunity for government leaders, religious figures, and ordinary citizens to come together and reinforce harmony, moral responsibility, and peaceful coexistence.

Deputy Mufti of Zanzibar, Sheikh Mahmoud Mussa Wadi, added that the National Iftar strengthens brotherhood among believers and promotes stronger relationships across different groups within the Muslim community.

The event was organized by key institutions including the Office of the Mufti of Zanzibar, the Zanzibar Tourism Commission, and the Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). ZBC Director-General Ramadhan Bukini praised the gathering as historic, noting that it demonstrated the power of unity and collective spirit, only possible in a peaceful society.

Arif Abbas Manji, Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Tourism Commission, highlighted the tourism benefits of the event. He explained that such large-scale gatherings showcase Zanzibar as a safe and peaceful destination capable of hosting international-standard events. The Commission used the occasion to promote Zanzibar globally as a destination that blends faith, culture, and tourism, strengthening its international appeal and economic growth through tourism.

The National Iftar not only reinforced spiritual and cultural values but also positioned Zanzibar as a model for Halal tourism, demonstrating how religious and community events can attract international visitors while celebrating local traditions, culture, and hospitality.
