TANAPA Expands Tourism Through Sports, Attracting Global Visitors and Investors
Tanzania is strengthening its position as one of Africa’s emerging sports tourism destinations, with the country’s national parks increasingly becoming platforms for international sporting events that attract visitors, investors, and tourism stakeholders from around the world.
The latest milestone came on May 31, 2026, when the Cape to Cairo Arusha International Marathon brought together athletes and participants from several countries, highlighting the growing role of sports tourism in promoting Tanzania’s attractions and creating new economic opportunities.
Speaking during the official launch of the marathon in Arusha, Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, praised the efforts of the Tanzania National Parks Authority in using sports tourism to market Tanzania globally while stimulating economic growth and investment.

International Athletes Discover Tanzania’s Tourism Attractions
The marathon attracted participants from China, South Korea, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the United Kingdom, and Tanzania, transforming the event into a powerful international tourism showcase.
Many participants combined the sporting event with visits to Arusha National Park, where they experienced Tanzania’s wildlife, landscapes, and adventure tourism offerings. Several international visitors expressed interest in returning for extended holidays after discovering the country’s tourism potential.
According to tourism stakeholders, sporting events provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience Tanzania beyond traditional safari packages, encouraging repeat visits and longer stays.

Sports Tourism Emerging as a Key Growth Sector
Minister Makonda noted that sports tourism has become an increasingly important tool for promoting Tanzania both regionally and internationally.
He emphasized that events involving athletics, cycling, motorsports, and motorcycle competitions are helping to increase awareness of Tanzania’s attractions while creating business opportunities for local communities, tour operators, accommodation providers, transport services, and investors.
“I have witnessed the excellent work being done by TANAPA in promoting Tanzania’s tourism attractions. Arusha National Park is among the destinations with unique experiences, and stakeholders should take advantage of these opportunities to grow their businesses and contribute to economic development,” he said.

Running Through One of Tanzania’s Most Scenic National Parks
The minister also announced that the upcoming Arusha Tourism Marathon, scheduled for July 2026, will provide participants with a rare opportunity to run inside Arusha National Park.
This distinctive experience combines fitness, adventure, and wildlife viewing, offering runners the chance to enjoy breathtaking scenery that includes forests, open grasslands, volcanic landscapes, and views of Mount Meru.
Such experiences are becoming increasingly popular among international travelers seeking active and experiential tourism activities.

Tourism, Conservation and Investment Benefits
According to Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner Witness Shoo, sports tourism has already contributed to increased visitor numbers while creating new opportunities for business growth and investment around protected areas.
He noted that tourism events help diversify Tanzania’s tourism products while generating revenue that supports conservation efforts and community development initiatives.
The growing popularity of sports tourism is also encouraging investment in hospitality facilities, transportation services, event management, and tourism infrastructure.
Arusha Emerging as a Regional Sports Tourism Hub
By May 31, 2026, Arusha National Park had already played a key role in hosting and coordinating several major sporting events, including the Cape to Cairo Arusha International Marathon, the Arusha Tourism Marathon, and the Subaru Festival.
These events continue to strengthen Arusha’s reputation as a destination where sports, conservation, and tourism intersect, offering visitors unique experiences in one of East Africa’s most celebrated tourism regions.
Tanzania Diversifies Its Tourism Portfolio
As Tanzania continues expanding beyond traditional wildlife tourism, sports tourism is emerging as a powerful contributor to economic growth and destination marketing.
With iconic attractions such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar, Tanzania is increasingly combining nature, adventure, culture, and sports to attract new segments of global travelers.
Tourism experts believe the continued growth of sports tourism will help position Tanzania as one of Africa’s leading destinations for active travel, international events, and sustainable tourism investment.
