Tanzania Unveils Bold Strategy to Attract 8 Million Tourists by 2030

Dodoma: Ashatu Kijaji has unveiled an ambitious tourism growth strategy aimed at positioning Tanzania among Africa’s leading global travel destinations by targeting eight million tourists annually by the year 2030.
The announcement was made on May 15, 2026, while presenting the budget estimates of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism before Parliament in Dodoma.
According to Minister Kijaji, the Ministry is implementing major strategic initiatives designed not only to increase tourist arrivals, but also to raise the contribution of the tourism sector to the national economy from 17 percent in 2025 to 20 percent by 2030.

Tanzania to Use Global Events as Tourism Promotion Platforms
One of the key strategies highlighted by the Minister is the aggressive use of major international events to market Tanzania’s tourism attractions, culture, wildlife, hospitality sector, and investment opportunities to global audiences.
Minister Kijaji explained that Tanzania is preparing to maximize international visibility through several high-profile global and continental events expected to take place in the country and across the East African region over the next few years.
Among the major events expected to support Tanzania’s tourism promotion strategy are:
- 2027 Africa Cup of Nations
- Miss World 2027
- 153rd IPU Assembly
- World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026
- 2026 FIFA World Cup promotional campaigns
“The Ministry will continue utilizing strategic international platforms and events to promote Tanzania globally and increase the number of tourists visiting the country’s attractions,” Minister Kijaji told Parliament.
Arusha to Host Global Parliamentary Gathering
The Minister revealed that Arusha is expected to host the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in October 2026.
The international gathering is projected to attract more than 1,500 participants, including 183 parliamentary speakers and delegates from countries around the world.
Tourism stakeholders believe the event will significantly increase international exposure for Tanzania while boosting conference tourism, hotel occupancy, transport services, and local businesses.
Arusha continues to position itself as one of Africa’s leading destinations for diplomatic meetings, international conferences, safari tourism, and conservation tourism.
World Travel Awards 2026 to Elevate Tanzania’s Global Tourism Brand
Tanzania is also expected to host the prestigious World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026 in December 2026.
The event is anticipated to attract more than 1,000 tourism stakeholders, investors, travel professionals, and international media representatives from Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, and South America.
Industry experts say hosting the globally recognized tourism awards ceremony will further strengthen Tanzania’s reputation as a premium travel destination and create new opportunities for tourism marketing, investment promotion, and international partnerships.
Miss World 2027 Expected to Bring Massive International Exposure
Another major global event expected to support tourism growth is Miss World 2027, scheduled to take place in May 2027.
The international beauty and cultural event is expected to feature participants from over 120 countries and attract approximately 20,000 visitors, media personnel, organizers, and fans from around the world.
Officials believe the event will provide Tanzania with a major opportunity to showcase its wildlife attractions, beaches, cultural heritage, hospitality industry, and investment potential to a global audience.
AFCON 2027 to Position East Africa on the Global Stage
Minister Kijaji also emphasized the importance of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Tanzania will co-host alongside East African partner nations.
The tournament is expected to feature 24 African national teams and attract over 1.8 million stadium spectators, while reaching approximately 1.9 billion television viewers worldwide through more than 185 international broadcasting stations.
Tourism analysts say AFCON 2027 presents one of the biggest opportunities for Tanzania to market its tourism products to global audiences while stimulating investment in infrastructure, hospitality, aviation, transport, and entertainment sectors.
FIFA World Cup 2026 Promotion Strategy Also Planned
In addition to hosting events locally, the Ministry is preparing a special international tourism marketing strategy linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the United States.
The campaign will involve:
- International sports broadcasters
- Influencers and digital creators
- Tourism stakeholders
- Global media partnerships
- Digital tourism campaigns
- Promotional branding in strategic international locations
The strategy aims to increase Tanzania’s visibility among global travelers by positioning the country as a leading safari, beach, cultural, and adventure tourism destination.
Tourism Positioned as a Major Economic Driver
The Government continues to prioritize tourism as one of the key sectors driving economic growth, employment creation, foreign exchange earnings, conservation financing, and community development.
With major infrastructure investments, global tourism campaigns, and increasing international partnerships, Tanzania is positioning itself to become one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in Africa over the next decade.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the Ministry’s ambitious vision, noting that the integration of sports tourism, conference tourism, cultural tourism, and international events could significantly transform Tanzania’s tourism economy.
