The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, has officially launched a nationwide grading and regrading exercise for accommodation and food service establishments scheduled to run from May to June 2026.
The initiative marks a major step in Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to strengthen hospitality standards, improve visitor experiences, and position the country among Africa’s leading world-class tourism destinations.
At the center of the exercise is the AsERT (Accommodation Establishments Registration Tool) system, a digital platform developed to streamline the registration, assessment, classification, and monitoring of hospitality facilities across Tanzania.

Raising Hospitality Standards Across Tanzania
The grading and regrading exercise is being conducted under the Tourism Act (Cap. 65) and follows harmonized standards established by the East African Community for hospitality and tourism services.
The program seeks to ensure that hotels, lodges, guesthouses, resorts, camps, restaurants, and other hospitality establishments operate under measurable and internationally recognized quality standards.
Key objectives of the initiative include:
- Improving service quality and professionalism within the hospitality industry
- Enhancing visitor comfort, satisfaction, and safety
- Strengthening compliance with national and regional tourism standards
- Promoting transparency and accountability across tourism businesses
- Reinforcing Tanzania’s image as a competitive global tourism destination
Through the assessment process, facilities will be graded and classified into recognized hospitality categories, helping travelers make informed booking decisions based on verified service quality.
Digital Transformation Through AsERT
The introduction of the AsERT digital platform represents another important milestone in Tanzania’s tourism modernization agenda.
The system is expected to improve efficiency and transparency throughout the grading process by enabling hospitality operators to:
- Register establishments online
- Submit operational information digitally
- Track assessment progress
- Access classification results efficiently
Government officials note that the digital system will also support better sector monitoring, policy planning, and data management within Tanzania’s growing tourism economy.
Nationwide Rollout Begins in Key Tourism Regions
The first phase of the grading and regrading exercise will focus on major tourism and business hubs, including:
- Dar es Salaam
- Morogoro
- Kilimanjaro
Hundreds of hospitality establishments are expected to participate during this initial phase before the exercise expands to other regions across the country.
Authorities have emphasized that participation is mandatory for accommodation and food service providers, with non-compliance potentially leading to regulatory penalties.
Operators are therefore encouraged to complete registration through the official AsERT platform and cooperate fully during the assessment process.

Why Hospitality Grading Matters
As global tourism markets become increasingly competitive, service quality and destination credibility have become essential factors influencing travelers’ decisions.
Today’s international and domestic tourists expect reliable standards, safety, professionalism, and value for money when selecting accommodation and tourism services.
Industry experts believe the grading and regrading initiative will support:
- Greater international market confidence in Tanzania’s tourism sector
- Improved consumer trust and transparency
- Fair competition among hospitality operators
- Continuous quality improvement across the industry
- Better alignment with East African regional tourism standards
The exercise also reinforces the principle that high-quality hospitality services play a central role in building a strong destination brand and supporting sustainable tourism growth.
Supporting Tanzania’s Tourism Vision
Tourism remains one of Tanzania’s fastest-growing economic sectors, contributing significantly to employment, conservation financing, investment, foreign exchange earnings, and local community development.
By strengthening hospitality standards and improving service delivery, Tanzania continues to position itself as a premier destination for safari tourism, beach holidays, cultural experiences, mountain adventures, and luxury travel in Africa.
The nationwide grading exercise demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring that the country’s tourism infrastructure evolves alongside growing global demand and international visitor expectations.
