OVER 500 RUNNERS CELEBRATE SPORTS TOURISM AT ARUSHA TOURISM MARATHON

Arusha, Tanzania – July 12, 2026 — More than 500 runners from Tanzania and abroad gathered in the breathtaking surroundings of Arusha National Park for the 2026 Arusha Tourism Marathon, reaffirming the growing role of sports tourism in promoting Tanzania's spectacular natural attractions and encouraging both domestic and international travel.

The event attracted participants from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and Germany, bringing together professional athletes, recreational runners, families, and nature enthusiasts for a unique experience where fitness meets wildlife, conservation, and adventure.

Running Through One of Tanzania's Most Scenic National Parks

Unlike traditional city marathons, the Arusha Tourism Marathon offered participants the rare opportunity to run through one of Tanzania's most diverse national parks.

Competitors took part in four race categories:

  • 21 Kilometres (Half Marathon)
  • 10 Kilometres
  • 5 Kilometres
  • 2.5 Kilometres Fun Run

As they made their way along the scenic routes, runners enjoyed breathtaking views of Mount Meru, lush forests, open grasslands, crater landscapes, and an abundance of wildlife that make Arusha National Park one of Tanzania's most accessible safari destinations.

Many participants also experienced the park's famous "Little Serengeti," renowned for its rich populations of giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, and hundreds of bird species.

Sports Driving Domestic Tourism

Speaking during the event, Senior Assistant Commissioner for Conservation and Chief Warden of Arusha National Park, Witness Shoo, said the marathon has become an important platform for promoting Tanzania's tourism attractions.

He noted that events such as the Arusha Tourism Marathon encourage more Tanzanians to explore their own country's natural heritage while simultaneously showcasing Tanzania's unique tourism experiences to international visitors.

According to Shoo, combining sports with conservation creates meaningful experiences that strengthen appreciation for protected areas and support sustainable tourism development.

A Winning Formula for Tourism and Local Economy

The Founder and Director of the Arusha Tourism Marathon, Cornell Magoti, explained that the event was established to connect sports with tourism while generating economic opportunities for local communities.

He said the marathon continues to:

  • Promote Tanzania's tourism attractions.
  • Encourage domestic travel.
  • Increase hotel occupancy.
  • Support local transport providers.
  • Generate business for restaurants, tour operators, and small enterprises.
  • Inspire healthy lifestyles through outdoor recreation.

By attracting visitors from several countries, the marathon contributes directly to Arusha's tourism economy while reinforcing the city's reputation as Tanzania's safari capital.

Participants Praise the Unique Experience

Many runners described the marathon as unlike any other race they had experienced.

The peaceful environment, clean air, spectacular scenery, and the opportunity to exercise while surrounded by wildlife made the event both memorable and inspiring.

Several participants said they intend to return with family and friends to explore more of Tanzania's national parks and participate in future sports tourism events.

The combination of adventure, fitness, and conservation created an experience that left a lasting impression on both local and international visitors.

Positioning Tanzania as Africa's Sports Tourism Hub

The Arusha Tourism Marathon has grown into one of Tanzania's flagship sports tourism events, supporting government efforts to diversify tourism products beyond traditional wildlife safaris.

Through collaboration between Tanzania National Parks Authority and tourism stakeholders, the event continues to demonstrate how sporting activities can complement conservation while attracting new visitor segments.

Sports tourism is increasingly becoming an important component of Tanzania's tourism strategy, creating year-round travel opportunities that benefit local communities, conservation efforts, and the wider economy.

Where Adventure Meets Nature

With the majestic backdrop of Mount Meru, abundant wildlife, and world-class natural scenery, the Arusha Tourism Marathon showcases the unique experiences that only Tanzania can offer.

As participation continues to grow each year, the marathon is strengthening Tanzania's position as one of Africa's leading destinations for sports tourism, adventure travel, and sustainable outdoor recreation.

The success of the 2026 edition highlights the country's ability to combine athletics, conservation, and tourism into unforgettable experiences that inspire visitors to discover more of Tanzania's extraordinary natural heritage.
