Over 650 Runners Participate in Karatu's Fame Marathon Supporting Community Healthcare Initiatives
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to community development and sustainable conservation through active participation in the third edition of the Fame Marathon, held in Karatu District, Arusha Region.
The event brought together approximately 650 participants from Tanzania and abroad, competing across multiple race categories including 21-kilometre, 10-kilometre, 5-kilometre and 2-kilometre distances.
Leading by example, Ngorongoro Conservation Commissioner Abdul-Razaq Badru joined runners in the event, highlighting the growing partnership between conservation institutions and local communities in promoting health, social welfare and sustainable development.

Conservation and Community Development Go Hand in Hand
Speaking during the official launch of the marathon, Commissioner Badru emphasized that successful conservation extends beyond protecting wildlife and ecosystems.
He noted that sustainable conservation is built on strong relationships with communities living around protected areas, supported through initiatives that improve livelihoods, health services, education and social well-being.
According to Commissioner Badru, events such as the Fame Marathon create valuable opportunities to unite conservation stakeholders, local residents, development partners and the private sector around causes that directly benefit communities.
He further noted that supporting healthcare initiatives contributes to building resilient communities that can actively participate in conservation and tourism development.

Marathon Supports Healthcare Services in Northern Tanzania
The marathon was organized by Fame Hospital, a leading healthcare institution based in Karatu that serves communities across Karatu, Ngorongoro and neighboring districts.
According to Fame Hospital's Director of Operations, William Mhapa, the annual marathon has become an important platform for mobilizing support for healthcare services and emergency medical assistance.
He explained that proceeds and partnerships generated through the event help support vulnerable patients, emergency treatment programs and various community outreach initiatives aimed at improving access to quality healthcare.
"The marathon is more than a sporting event. It is a community-driven initiative that helps us provide critical support to patients in need while strengthening partnerships that improve healthcare delivery in our region," he said.
Sports Tourism Creating New Opportunities
The growing popularity of marathon events in northern Tanzania is also contributing to the development of sports tourism, one of the country's emerging tourism segments.
Participants traveling to Karatu for the marathon had the opportunity to experience the region's spectacular landscapes, cultural attractions and world-famous wildlife destinations, including the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park.
Tourism experts note that sporting events play an increasingly important role in attracting visitors, extending visitor stays and generating income for local businesses including hotels, restaurants, tour operators and transport providers.
Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Development
The success of the Fame Marathon reflects the importance of collaboration between conservation authorities, healthcare institutions, local communities and development stakeholders.
Such partnerships align with Tanzania's broader vision of ensuring that tourism and conservation contribute directly to community welfare while supporting economic growth and environmental sustainability.
For communities surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, initiatives that combine health, sports, tourism and conservation create meaningful opportunities for social and economic advancement.
Building a Healthier Future
As participation continues to grow each year, the Fame Marathon is emerging as one of northern Tanzania's notable community sporting events, bringing together people from different backgrounds for a shared cause.
The event demonstrates how sports can serve as a powerful tool for promoting healthy lifestyles, supporting essential healthcare services and strengthening community engagement.
With conservation authorities, healthcare providers and local communities working together, the marathon continues to showcase the positive impact of partnerships that place people, nature and development at the center of progress.
