New Brussels–Kilimanjaro Route Expected to Boost Tourism, Trade and Investment

Tanzania has achieved another significant milestone in strengthening its international tourism connectivity following the launch of direct flights between Brussels, Belgium, and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), a development expected to increase tourist arrivals, attract investment, and deepen economic relations between Tanzania and Europe.

The inaugural Brussels Airlines flight touched down at Kilimanjaro International Airport on June 3, 2026, marking the implementation of the Air Services Agreement signed between Tanzania and Belgium in 2021.

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the new route as a major achievement that positions northern Tanzania closer to one of Europe’s most important travel and business hubs.

✈️ Direct Access from the Heart of Europe

The new service connects Tanzania directly with Brussels, a city widely recognized as the political and administrative capital of the European Union.

The route is expected to significantly improve travel convenience for European tourists, business travelers, investors, and members of the Tanzanian diaspora living across Europe.

Speaking during the reception of the inaugural flight, James Millya described the launch as a reflection of the strengthening diplomatic, economic, and tourism relations between Tanzania, Belgium, and the broader European market.

According to the Deputy Minister, improved air connectivity will make Tanzania more accessible while also offering Tanzanian travelers easier access to European destinations through Brussels Airlines’ extensive international network.

🌍 Boost for Tanzania’s Tourism Industry

The launch comes at a time when Tanzania continues expanding international air connections to support its rapidly growing tourism sector.

Industry experts believe the direct flights will encourage more European travelers to explore Tanzania’s diverse tourism attractions, ranging from wildlife safaris and mountain adventures to beach holidays and cultural experiences.

The route is expected to serve as a major gateway for visitors heading to some of Tanzania’s most celebrated destinations, including:

  • Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world's most famous trekking destinations.
  • Serengeti National Park – Home to the Great Wildebeest Migration and iconic African wildlife.
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area – A UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its spectacular crater ecosystem.
  • Tarangire National Park – Famous for giant elephant herds and ancient baobab trees.
  • Zanzibar – The Indian Ocean paradise known for its beaches, history, and Swahili culture

📈 Economic Benefits Beyond Tourism

Beyond tourism, the direct connection is expected to facilitate trade, investment, and business exchanges between Tanzania and Europe.

Officials anticipate that easier travel will encourage greater investor interest in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, renewable energy, logistics, and infrastructure development.

The improved air link is also expected to support conferences, business events, educational exchanges, and diplomatic engagements, contributing to broader economic growth.

Tourism economists note that international air connectivity often serves as a catalyst for destination competitiveness, helping countries attract higher visitor numbers and foreign direct investment.

🦁 Northern Tanzania Strengthens Its Global Appeal

The arrival of Brussels Airlines further strengthens northern Tanzania's position as one of Africa’s premier tourism regions.

With Kilimanjaro International Airport serving as the primary gateway to Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, visitors can easily access a range of world-class attractions within a short travel distance.

The airport continues to play a strategic role in connecting international markets with Tanzania’s leading tourism destinations, helping support the country's ambition to become a top global travel destination.

Tanzania Continues Expanding International Connectivity

The Brussels Airlines launch follows a series of efforts by Tanzania to increase international air access and diversify tourism source markets.

Government officials and tourism stakeholders view enhanced connectivity as essential for achieving long-term tourism growth, increasing foreign exchange earnings, creating jobs, and supporting sustainable economic development.

As more international airlines expand their presence in Tanzania, travelers from Europe and beyond are finding it easier than ever to experience the country's unique blend of wildlife, adventure, culture, and coastal tourism.
