Overview

Serengeti National Park | African Environments

Walking in the Serengeti is safari in its purest form. No tracks, no permanent camps, no other vehicles — just vast, open wilderness and the freedom to move through it slowly, thoughtfully, and on foot. This is not about covering distance; it’s about learning to read the land, understanding wildlife behaviour, and experiencing Africa at ground level.

Each walk is shaped by the landscape, the wildlife, and the interests of the group. One moment you may be following a line of lion tracks across open plains, the next sitting quietly above a waterhole watching animals come in to drink. This is true exploration, guided by instinct, experience, and deep bush knowledge.

All walks are led by highly trained African Environments walking guides, accompanied by an armed park ranger. For larger groups, a second guide walks mid-group. Lightweight wilderness camps are moved daily and set up exclusively for your party, ensuring minimal environmental impact and complete privacy.

FAQs

Are walking safaris safe?
Yes. All walks are led by highly trained African Environments walking guides and accompanied by an armed National Park ranger. Safety briefings are given before walking, group sizes are controlled, and wildlife encounters are managed calmly and professionally.
Do I need to be very fit to join a walking safari?
No extreme fitness is required. Walks are unhurried and tailored to the group’s ability and interests. Distances are flexible, with plenty of time to stop, observe, rest, and enjoy the surroundings.
What wildlife will we see on foot?
Walking safaris focus on understanding the ecosystem rather than chasing sightings. You may encounter plains game, giraffe, buffalo, and elephant, and you will certainly see tracks and signs of predators such as lion and hyena. Observations are always made at a safe distance.
What happens if we encounter dangerous animals?
Your guide and ranger read the landscape constantly. Routes are adjusted as needed, and encounters are handled with experience and caution. Guests are always briefed on how to behave while walking.
Where do we sleep?
You stay in lightweight, mobile wilderness camps set up exclusively for your group. Camps are comfortable but intentionally simple, allowing us to move daily and leave no lasting impact on the environment.
Are there toilets and washing facilities?
Yes. Camps include shared toilet and shower tents, with fresh water provided. Comfort is maintained while keeping camps low-impact and environmentally responsible.
What should I pack?
Guests need a small daypack, good walking shoes, sun protection, warm layers for mornings and evenings, and waterproofs. A detailed packing list is provided in advance.
Is this suitable for first-time safari guests?
Absolutely. Walking safaris offer a deeper understanding of Africa and pair beautifully with vehicle-based game viewing before or after the walk.
