Siha, Kilimanjaro Region – Tanzania

Siha District is preparing to welcome more than 800 participants from Tanzania and abroad during the upcoming West Kili Forest Tour Challenge, a major sports and tourism event expected to boost eco-tourism, environmental awareness, and local economic growth in the area.

The event was officially launched by Siha District Commissioner Christopher Timbuka on May 26, 2026, with organizers describing the competition as one of the region’s emerging tourism and sports attractions.

Scheduled to take place from June 20 to 21, 2026 within the scenic West Kilimanjaro forest corridor, the challenge will feature 5km, 10km, and 21km races alongside cycling and motorcycle competitions passing through breathtaking natural landscapes surrounding the forest reserve.

Promoting Eco-Tourism Through Sports

Speaking during the launch ceremony, Dr. Timbuka said the competition provides an important opportunity to position Siha as a leading destination for nature-based tourism and outdoor sporting events in Tanzania.

He explained that the event is expected to stimulate local businesses and create economic opportunities for residents through accommodation services, food vending, transportation, tourism activities, and other commercial services connected to the competition.

According to district authorities, preparations have already been finalized to ensure the event is successfully organized and becomes one of Tanzania’s key annual tourism and sports festivals.

A Unique Experience in West Kilimanjaro

Participants and visitors attending the event will have an opportunity to experience the spectacular landscapes of the West Kilimanjaro ecosystem, known for its forest scenery, wildlife corridors, fresh mountain climate, and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The competition routes are expected to pass through scenic forest areas, creating a unique adventure experience that combines fitness, tourism, and environmental appreciation.

Organizers say the event is designed not only to promote sports tourism but also to encourage environmental conservation and sustainable tourism activities around protected forest areas.

Entertainment and Community Engagement

Ahead of the main competition, organizers have also planned a special entertainment evening aimed at bringing together participants, tourism stakeholders, local residents, and visitors through social activities, music performances, food experiences, beverages, and cultural entertainment.

The entertainment festival is expected to create a lively atmosphere and further showcase the hospitality and tourism potential of the Siha area.

Tourism Stakeholders Join Promotion Efforts

Siha Member of Parliament Godwin Molel said he will continue mobilizing residents, tourism stakeholders, and partners to support and participate in the event in order to strengthen tourism and economic activities within the district.

He further revealed plans to collaborate with Zara Tours, the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), and the Tanzania Luxury Tourism Organization (TLTO) to invite tourism agents and travel companies to explore the destination and witness its tourism opportunities first-hand.

Conservation Through Tourism and Sports

According to West Kilimanjaro Game Reserve Chief Conservator Robert Faida, the West Kili Forest Tour Challenge is more than just a sports competition.

He described the event as an important platform for promoting the tourism attractions of West Kilimanjaro while simultaneously raising awareness about environmental conservation through sustainable tourism and outdoor recreation.

Conservation experts believe sports tourism initiatives such as this can play a significant role in supporting conservation efforts while generating income for local communities surrounding protected areas.

West Kilimanjaro Emerging as a Tourism Hub

The West Kilimanjaro area continues to attract increasing attention for its unique combination of wildlife, forests, Maasai cultural experiences, and panoramic mountain landscapes.

Tourism stakeholders say events like the West Kili Forest Tour Challenge are helping diversify Tanzania’s tourism offerings beyond traditional safari experiences by introducing adventure tourism, wellness tourism, and eco-sport activities.

With growing international interest in outdoor experiences and sustainable travel, Siha is positioning itself as one of Tanzania’s emerging destinations for eco-tourism and active travel experiences.
