TANZANIA OUTEARNS KENYA IN TOURISM REVENUE AS HIGH-VALUE TOURISM STRATEGY PAYS OFF

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Tanzania has reinforced its position as one of Africa's leading high-value tourism destinations after recording higher tourism earnings than Kenya in 2025, despite welcoming fewer international visitors.

The latest tourism statistics show that Tanzania generated US$4.41 billion in tourism revenue, significantly outperforming Kenya's US$3.30 billion, even though Kenya attracted 2.70 million international visitors compared to Tanzania's 2.29 million.

The figures demonstrate that Tanzania's tourism strategy is increasingly focused on maximizing the economic value of every visitor rather than simply increasing arrival numbers.

Quality Over Quantity

The latest performance confirms that Tanzania's tourism industry is successfully transitioning from a volume-based model to one centered on premium experiences, longer visitor stays, and higher tourist spending.

According to the International Visitors' Exit Survey (IVES) 2025, tourism revenue grew by 13 percent during the year, while international arrivals increased by 7.1 percent, indicating that visitor spending rose much faster than visitor numbers.

Average daily expenditure on Mainland Tanzania increased to:

  • US$289 per visitor per night in 2025
  • Up from US$243 recorded in 2024

In Zanzibar, average visitor spending also increased significantly, reaching:

  • US$274 per visitor per night
  • Up from US$251 in 2024

These figures underline Tanzania's growing appeal among travelers seeking premium safari, beach, cultural, and adventure experiences.

Premium Tourism Products Driving Growth

Tanzania continues to attract visitors willing to spend more on unique travel experiences.

The country's strongest-performing tourism segments include:

  • Hunting tourism – US$711 average daily spending per visitor
  • Cultural tourism – US$537 per visitor per day
  • Wildlife safari tourism – US$452 per visitor per day

These specialized tourism products generate substantial economic value while supporting conservation, local employment, and community development.

Luxury safari lodges, exclusive wildlife experiences, mountain climbing, cultural encounters, and world-class beach holidays continue to position Tanzania among Africa's highest-yield tourism destinations.

Holiday Tourism Remains the Backbone

Holidaymakers continued to dominate Tanzania's tourism economy in 2025.

Leisure travel generated approximately:

  • US$4.23 billion
  • Representing nearly 96 percent of all tourism earnings.

The report also found that organized package tours accounted for 75.2 percent of total tourism receipts, reflecting Tanzania's strength in premium safari and beach holiday packages that typically generate higher visitor spending than independent travel.

International Markets Supporting High-Value Tourism

Long-haul markets continue to contribute significantly to Tanzania's tourism success.

The leading international source markets in 2025 included:

  • United States
  • Italy
  • France
  • Kenya
  • United Kingdom

Visitors from North America and Europe generally stay longer and spend more, making them key contributors to Tanzania's tourism earnings.

The continued diversification of source markets is helping strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of Tanzania's tourism sector.

Investment Continues to Strengthen the Sector

The Government continues investing in tourism infrastructure, destination marketing, conservation, and service quality to sustain this competitive advantage.

Ongoing improvements include:

  • Modern transport infrastructure.
  • Upgraded national park facilities.
  • Enhanced conservation efforts.
  • Expansion of tourism products.
  • Improved hospitality services.
  • Stronger international destination marketing.

Efforts are also underway to diversify tourism through the development of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE), cruise tourism, cultural tourism, sports tourism, and community-based tourism.

A Model for Sustainable Tourism Growth

Tourism experts note that Tanzania's performance demonstrates that success in modern tourism is no longer measured solely by visitor arrivals.

Instead, increasing the value generated by every visitor has become a key indicator of competitiveness.

By focusing on premium experiences, sustainable conservation, and authentic cultural and nature-based tourism, Tanzania has successfully built a tourism model that delivers greater economic returns while supporting environmental protection and local communities.

As the country works toward its national target of eight million international visitors by 2030, maintaining high service standards and expanding tourism offerings will be essential to preserving its position as one of Africa's most rewarding destinations for travelers and investors alike.
