Overview

Exclusive Camps • Walking Wilderness • Slow Safari at Your Pace

African Environments creates private, immersive journeys for travellers who value space, silence and shared time over crowds and checklists. For more than 35 years, our family has been quietly shaping experiences where the wilderness feels personal — and where your days are not dictated by anyone else’s schedule. Much of our work happens quietly, far from the spotlight — creating space where our guests feel like they’ve been let in on something special.

The difference is simple, and rare: real exclusivity. Our three EcoLux camps in Arusha National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti are all exclusive use. When you stay with us, the entire camp is yours. No other guests. No compromises. The camp revolves around you — when you wake, when you eat, where you go, how fast or slow the day unfolds.

This changes everything. Couples rediscover unhurried time together. Families reconnect without distraction. Multigenerational groups travel with ease, because everyone can move at their own pace while sharing something extraordinary.

For deeper immersion, we offer walking safaris in remote areas of the Serengeti, where only a handful of operators are permitted. On foot, with armed guides, the land reveals itself slowly and honestly.

In a country where most safaris are shared, privacy has become the true luxury. Once you experience Tanzania this way, the difference is unmistakable.

This private safari is a carefully curated journey through some of northern Tanzania’s most remarkable ecosystems - from the misty forests of Arusha National Park to the vast, untamed wilderness of the Serengeti. Designed for travellers who value depth over speed, this is a safari shaped by people, place, and purpose.

Every night is spent in exclusive-use camps, every day moves at your pace, and every experience is led by highly trained guides who are as passionate about conservation and culture as they are about wildlife.

FAQs

Is this safari suitable for first-time visitors to Africa?
Yes. While the itinerary includes adventurous elements such as walking safaris, it is carefully designed to be safe, flexible, and well supported. Activities are tailored to your comfort level, and guests are always accompanied by highly trained guides and armed rangers where required.
How physically demanding is the walking safari?
Walking distances and pace are entirely flexible. This safari is not about covering long distances but about moving slowly and mindfully through the landscape. Walks can be adjusted daily to suit fitness levels, weather, and interests, making it suitable for most active travellers.
How safe are the walking activities in the Serengeti?
Safety is paramount. All walking safaris are led by experienced walking guides and accompanied by armed park rangers. Routes are carefully chosen, wildlife behaviour is closely monitored, and strict protocols are followed at all times.
What does ‘exclusive-use camp’ mean?
Exclusive use means the camp is reserved solely for your group — no other guests, no shared dining areas, and no shared activities. This allows complete privacy, flexibility in daily schedules, and a truly personal safari experience.
What level of comfort can we expect in the camps?
Our camps combine comfort with authenticity. Spacious tents include proper beds, quality linens, ensuite or private facilities, excellent food, and attentive service — all while maintaining a light footprint on the environment with the camps being fully solar and simple plumbing systems to minimise water use. We advise all our guests to bring their own water bottle too as we have Katadyn filters throughout our camps.
What is the food like on safari?
Food is a highlight of many peoples experience. Our chefs prepare fresh, varied, and beautifully presented meals, from bush breakfasts and picnic lunches to three-course dinners served by lantern light. Dietary requirements are happily catered for with advance notice.
Who will be guiding us?
You will be accompanied by a highly experienced African Environments head guide throughout the safari, supported by assistant guides and camp teams as needed. All guides are knowledgeable, professional, and trained in wilderness first response.
Is this safari suitable for families or multi-generational groups?
Yes. This itinerary works very well for families, couples, and multi-generational groups due to its private nature and flexible pace. Activities can be adapted for different ages and interests.
What wildlife can we expect to see?
The itinerary covers diverse ecosystems, offering excellent opportunities to see elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and many plains game species. Walking safaris focus on understanding wildlife behaviour, tracks, and ecosystems rather than just sightings.
When is the best time to travel?
This safari operates year-round, with each season offering a different experience. Wildlife movements, walking conditions, and scenery vary throughout the year — we’re happy to advise on the best timing based on your interests.
How eco-friendly is this safari?
Sustainability is central to how we operate. Camps are semi-permanent or mobile, water is filtered rather than bottled, waste is carefully managed, and local communities are supported through long-term partnerships and employment.
Can the itinerary be customised?
Absolutely. This is a private safari, and every aspect — from walking distances and daily schedules to special celebrations and extensions — can be tailored to your needs.
What should guests pack for the walking safari?
Guests will need comfortable walking boots, lightweight clothing, warm layers for mornings and evenings, sun protection, and a small daypack. A full packing list will be provided before travel.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation cover, is mandatory for all guests.
