Overview

The Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route” or the “Tourist Route.” It earned this nickname because it is the oldest and one of the most established trails on the mountain, and it is the only route that offers dormitory-style sleeping huts instead of camping.

Approaching the mountain from the southeast, Marangu is often considered the most straightforward route due to its gradual slopes. The minimum duration is five days; however, adding an extra acclimatization day (making it six days) significantly increases summit success rates.

Marangu remains a popular choice for climbers who prefer hut accommodation and a well-defined trail.

FAQs

Why is it called the “Coca-Cola Route”?
It earned this nickname because it is one of the oldest and most popular routes, and it offers hut accommodations where soft drinks were historically available.
What makes Marangu different from other routes?
It is the only route with dormitory-style sleeping huts instead of camping tents. This makes it ideal for climbers who prefer more structured accommodation.
What is the success rate?
The 5-day itinerary has a lower success rate due to limited acclimatization time. The 6-day option (with one extra acclimatization day) significantly improves summit success.
Do I need prior climbing experience?
No technical climbing experience is required. However, good physical fitness and preparation are highly recommended.
What is the best time to climb?
The best months are: January to March June to October These periods offer clearer skies and more stable weather conditions.
What meals are provided on the mountain?
All meals during the climb are included. You will receive hot breakfasts, packed or hot lunches, and freshly prepared dinners. Special dietary requirements can be arranged in advance.
How many liters of water do I get daily?
You will receive at least 3 liters of treated drinking water per day, and refills are available.
What happens if I cannot reach the summit?
Your safety is the top priority. If altitude sickness or health concerns arise, the guide will escort you down safely. Rescue services are included in the package.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m) and emergency evacuation is mandatory.
