After Breakfast, Head Toward Lake Natron After breakfast, we head towards Lake Natron, located in the Great Rift Valley. On the way, you can enjoy stunning landscapes, pass traditional Maasai villages, and view Oldonyo Lengai, the only active volcano in East Africa. Lake Natron is a highly alkaline lake, famous for hosting large flocks of pink flamingos. Over 75% of the world’s flamingos breed here because it is remote, peaceful, and rich in food. These Lesser Flamingos are among the few animals that can survive in these extreme conditions, with microorganisms in the lake’s shallow waters giving it vibrant hues ranging from red to orange to pink. Lake Natron Activities Swimming Cool off in the natural plunge pools near the accommodation units or bar area. There is also a larger pool suitable for swimming further downstream. Endemic species are often found in the pools, and you can bring your own goggles or ask the team for a pair! Flamingo Walks Lesser Flamingos feed on algae found in soda lakes across Eastern Africa, with Lake Natron being their exclusive breeding ground. You can take early morning or sunset walks to the lake flats and get close to these graceful birds in their natural habitat. Bird Watching The lake flats are home to small streams, ponds, and hills that create diverse environments for birdlife. You can enjoy bird watching during morning or evening walks around the lake, marshes, and ponds, where a variety of bird species thrive in the alkaline oasis. Hominid Footprints Walk to the hominid footprints in the concession area. These tracks, confirmed to be over 120,000 years old, are the oldest known Homo sapiens track-ways discovered. This site offers a fascinating glimpse into early human history. Ngare Sero Waterfalls Enjoy half- or full-day hikes up the Engare Sero gorge to see beautiful waterfalls. The scenery is a unique mix of arid volcanic rocks and lush tropical palms. Wear shoes that can get wet, and bring a liter of water and snacks for the journey. Ngare Sero Source Adventure Hike A full-day hike takes you deep into the Ngare Sero gorge to the source of the river. A picnic lunch will be provided, and you’ll need at least 3 liters of water for the hike. This is a great alternative for those who prefer not to climb Oldonyo Lengai. Rift Valley Day Hike This adventurous 6-hour, 10km hike departs at dawn from camp. You’ll transfer to the base of the Rift Valley wall, where you’ll ascend close to Ngare Sero gorge to enjoy spectacular views. A picnic breakfast will be taken on top, and afterward, you’ll descend via a different route or the same way depending on time. Sundowner with a View Take a short drive to a nearby hilltop for a sundowner. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Natron, Oldonyo Lengai, and the Gelai Mountains. Watch the sun dip behind the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley for a perfect end to your day. Maasai Boma Visit This part of the Great Rift Valley is home to the Maasai people. You will visit a Maasai boma, with the main village located a few kilometers west at the base of the escarpment. Engare Sero, meaning “dappled water,” named after the river flowing out of the escarpment through a spectacular gorge that blends both arid and lush landscapes. Start early after breakfast to hike to a nearby waterfall before it gets too warm and leave enough time to comfortably get back to Arusha after lunch. The hike takes about 1 hour and takes you through the beautiful landscapes surrounding Lake Natron. Get ready to get wet, as you’ll have to cross the river a few times!
