Mkomazi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and lesser-explored wilderness areas, located along the northeastern border near Kilimanjaro and Tsavo ecosystems. Known as the sanctuary of the endangered black rhino, Mkomazi blends dramatic semi-arid landscapes with vital conservation efforts, offering visitors an intimate and uncrowded safari experience.
Unlike busier parks, Mkomazi provides a peaceful environment where wildlife roams freely across vast plains framed by the Pare and Usambara Mountains. Its success in rhino conservation has transformed it into a symbol of Tanzania’s commitment to protecting rare species.
Mkomazi is internationally recognized for its black rhino protection program. Inside a specially protected sanctuary, visitors may witness one of Africa’s most endangered animals thriving again.
Key species include:
Black rhino (protected sanctuary)
African wild dogs
Elephants and giraffes
Oryx, gerenuk, zebra, and eland
Lions and leopards (occasionally spotted)
Over 450 bird species
The park’s dry savannah ecosystem makes wildlife viewing clear and rewarding, especially during the dry season.
