ARUSHA, TANZANIA – Tanzania has taken another significant step toward expanding tourism in the country's northern circuit following the completion of the Engaresero Airstrip, a strategic infrastructure project expected to improve access to Lake Natron and unlock new opportunities for sustainable tourism, investment, and local economic development.
The new airstrip, constructed by the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), is set to transform travel to one of Tanzania's most spectacular yet less-explored destinations by reducing travel time and making Lake Natron more accessible to domestic and international visitors.
The announcement was made by TAWA Commanding Officer Prosper Kihunrwa during the National Conference and Launch of the Lake Natron Conservation Campaign, organized by Nature Tanzania, which brought together conservation stakeholders, tourism experts, government institutions, and development partners to discuss the future of one of East Africa's most ecologically significant landscapes.
A Major Boost for Lake Natron Tourism
According to TAWA, the Engaresero Airstrip addresses one of the biggest challenges facing tourism development around Lake Natron—limited transportation infrastructure.
Previously, visitors travelling from Arusha were required to spend several hours on the road before reaching the lake. With the completion of the airstrip, tourists will now enjoy faster and more convenient access, making Lake Natron an even more attractive destination for short-stay visitors, luxury safari clients, photographers, researchers, and elderly travelers.
Construction of the project began in May 2025 and was successfully completed in June 2026. Following comprehensive safety inspections, the facility has received certification after meeting all required aviation operational standards, making it ready for commercial tourism flights.
Tour operators, safari companies, and tourism stakeholders have already been informed that the airstrip is open for operations.
Strategic Gateway to a Unique Tourism Destination
Located in Engaresero Village in Ngorongoro District, the airstrip features a 1.2-kilometre runway measuring 23 metres wide, designed to accommodate aircraft serving tourists visiting Lake Natron and neighboring attractions within Tanzania's famous Northern Safari Circuit.
The facility is situated only about five kilometres from the entrance to Lake Natron's main tourism area, significantly improving visitor accessibility while supporting future tourism growth in the region.
To enhance aviation safety, TAWA has also invested in protective infrastructure around the airstrip due to the area's abundant wildlife, ensuring safe aircraft operations while maintaining harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.
Opening New Opportunities for Sustainable Tourism
Lake Natron is internationally recognized as one of Tanzania's most extraordinary natural attractions.
The destination is famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, colorful alkaline lake, breathtaking scenery, the nearby Ol Doinyo Lengai—Africa's only active carbonatite volcano—and as the most important breeding site for Lesser Flamingos in East Africa.
The improved accessibility is expected to encourage more visitors to combine Lake Natron with iconic destinations such as Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park, creating longer travel itineraries and increasing tourism revenue for northern Tanzania.
Tourism experts believe the investment will also stimulate community-based tourism, create employment opportunities, encourage investment in accommodation facilities, cultural tourism experiences, transport services, and conservation initiatives benefiting surrounding communities.

The completion of the Engaresero Airstrip aligns with Tanzania's broader strategy of investing in tourism infrastructure to improve visitor experiences and diversify tourism products beyond traditional safari destinations.
