KAGERA, TANZANIA – Tanzania is stepping up efforts to position Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park as a premier cross-border tourism destination following a government directive to intensify strategic marketing aimed at attracting visitors from neighboring Rwanda and Uganda.
The call was made by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, during the foundation stone laying ceremony for the construction of the Kifurusa Tourist Entrance Gate at Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park in Kagera Region.
Dr. Kijaji urged the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) to work closely with tourism stakeholders, regional partners, and the private sector to promote the park's unique wildlife, landscapes, and tourism experiences, taking advantage of its strategic location near two of East Africa's fastest-growing tourism markets.
She noted that strengthening the park's visibility in regional and international tourism markets will increase visitor arrivals, boost tourism revenue, create employment opportunities, and contribute to Tanzania's broader economic growth agenda.
Modern Tourism Infrastructure Underway
The Minister also launched the construction of a comprehensive tourism infrastructure project designed to significantly enhance the visitor experience at Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park.
The development includes a modern tourist entrance gate, residential houses for park officers and rangers, a 90-vehicle parking area, a tourism gift shop, visitor restaurant, public washrooms, ICT facilities, fire protection systems, solar-powered electricity, visitor resting shelters, landscaping improvements, and a 1.5-kilometre gravel access road connecting the entrance gate to the park.
The project is expected to be completed by September 30, 2026, marking a major milestone in improving tourism infrastructure in western Tanzania.
According to Dr. Kijaji, the investment demonstrates the government's commitment to developing emerging tourism destinations while improving service quality and increasing Tanzania's competitiveness within the East African tourism market.
Unlocking Cross-Border Tourism Opportunities
Situated in Kagera Region, Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park enjoys a strategic location near the borders of Rwanda and Uganda, offering exceptional opportunities for cross-border tourism packages that connect visitors to multiple destinations within the East African Community.
The park is home to diverse wildlife, scenic landscapes, birdlife, and rich ecosystems that remain relatively unexplored, making it an attractive destination for travelers seeking authentic safari experiences away from more crowded parks.
Tourism experts believe that improved accessibility and targeted destination marketing will encourage visitors arriving through Rwanda and Uganda to extend their journeys into western Tanzania, supporting local businesses and expanding tourism benefits across the region.
Government Commitment to Tourism Development
Dr. Kijaji emphasized that continued investment in tourism infrastructure is essential for diversifying Tanzania's tourism products and ensuring that emerging destinations receive greater recognition in regional and international markets.
Following the ceremony, the Minister addressed a public meeting in Isingiro Village, Kyerwa District, where she listened to community concerns and reaffirmed the government's commitment to implementing development projects that improve livelihoods while promoting sustainable conservation and tourism.
The event was attended by senior government leaders, regional authorities, TANAPA officials led by Commissioner of Conservation Massana Mwishawa, and representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
The development of Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park forms part of Tanzania's broader strategy to expand tourism beyond traditional destinations, strengthen regional tourism integration, and contribute to the national goal of increasing international tourist arrivals and tourism revenue.
