NGORONGORO LAUNCHES SCHOLARSHIP FUND TO NURTURE THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONSERVATION PROFESSIONALS
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – In a significant step toward empowering local communities through education, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has partnered with the Higher Education Students' Loans Board (HESLB) to establish the Ngorongoro Scholarship Fund, a new initiative that will provide higher education opportunities for students living within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The programme is designed to expand access to higher education while developing skilled professionals who will contribute to wildlife conservation, tourism development, environmental management, and sustainable community growth.
Investing in Education for Sustainable Conservation
The scholarship programme reflects Tanzania's commitment to ensuring that communities living in and around protected areas directly benefit from conservation initiatives.
Speaking during the launch in Dar es Salaam, Senior Assistant Commissioner for Conservation and Head of Community Development, Gloria Bideberi, said the initiative aims to improve educational opportunities for young people from Ngorongoro by ensuring that eligible students receive financial support to pursue university education.
She emphasized that the partnership with HESLB guarantees a transparent and merit-based scholarship selection process, ensuring fairness while giving qualified students equal access to educational opportunities.
"Education is the foundation for empowering communities to participate fully in economic, social, and environmental development," she said.
Supporting Future Careers in Conservation and Tourism
Operating under the theme "Sustainable Education for Community Development and Conservation," the scholarship will initially prioritize students pursuing programmes related to:
- Wildlife Conservation
- Natural Resource Management
- Forestry
- Tourism Management
- Environmental Sciences
- Heritage Conservation
- Other strategic fields supporting sustainable development
The initiative seeks to build a new generation of professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to protect Tanzania's globally important natural and cultural heritage.
First Cohort to Benefit in 2026/27
According to HESLB Executive Director Dr. Bill Kiwia, the scholarship programme will officially begin during the 2026/2027 academic year.
The first phase will sponsor 15 students, with NCAA allocating TZS 99 million to finance tuition and related educational costs.
Dr. Kiwia noted that a dedicated scholarship guideline has already been developed jointly by NCAA and HESLB, outlining eligibility criteria, application procedures, priority academic programmes, and funding conditions.
A digital application system has also been completed to simplify the application process.
The scholarship application window is scheduled to open on 15 August 2026, while awareness campaigns are underway to ensure eligible applicants understand the requirements and submit their applications on time.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Before launching the Ngorongoro Scholarship Fund, NCAA had already been supporting education through community development programmes implemented in collaboration with the Pastoral Council.
During the previous financial year alone, more than 15,000 beneficiaries from communities within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area received educational support across various levels and disciplines, including medicine, engineering, accounting, conservation, and other professional fields.
The new scholarship fund strengthens these efforts by introducing a structured, transparent, and sustainable financing mechanism dedicated to higher education.
Education Driving Community and Tourism Development
The initiative recognizes that investing in education is essential for both conservation and tourism.
As Tanzania's tourism industry continues to grow, demand is increasing for skilled professionals in wildlife management, eco-tourism, heritage conservation, hospitality, and environmental planning.
By enabling young people from Ngorongoro to access higher education, the scholarship is expected to strengthen local participation in the tourism economy while ensuring that communities remain active partners in protecting one of the world's most celebrated conservation landscapes.
