Mweka Tunnel Emerges as Northern Circuit Game-Changer

KILIMANJARO, TANZANIA: African Heart Expeditions has unveiled a powerful new tourism innovation—introducing the Mweka Tunnel as a standalone itinerary within the Northern Circuit, setting a new benchmark for cultural tourism in Tanzania.

The initiative follows endorsement by the Parliamentary Committee, which officially recognized the Mweka Tunnel as a key northern attraction, unlocking its potential for both domestic and international tourism growth.

Speaking to GoTanzania, Managing Director and Partner of African Heart Expeditions, Mosses Loiruck Mollel, described the launch as a bold step forward.

“This is a defining moment. We are proud to be the first to create a dedicated Mweka Tunnel experience—connecting travelers to Tanzania’s hidden heritage,” he said.

Located at the Mweka College of African Wildlife Management near Mount Kilimanjaro, the tunnel is a historic masterpiece built in 1918. Stretching 700 meters through solid rock, it once served as a refuge for communities during conflict, complete with chambers for people and livestock.

Today, it stands as a protected national heritage site—celebrated for its cultural significance, resilience, and indigenous engineering.

The itinerary delivers a complete experience, combining the Mweka Tunnel exploration with Kilimanjaro walking tours, scenic waterfalls, and a visit to Chemka Hot Springs—renowned for its crystal-clear geothermal waters.

The full package is now live on the GoTanzania portal, making it easy for travelers to explore and book. Mr. Mollel called on both local and international tourists to seize the opportunity.

Backed by over TSh120 million in government investment for site upgrades, including improved access and lighting, the Mweka Tunnel is rapidly emerging as a flagship cultural destination.
