MIKUMI: Construction of Kikoboga Airport, located within Mikumi National Park, has reached 75 percent completion, marking a major step toward improving air access to one of Tanzania’s key wildlife tourism destinations.
The project includes a passenger terminal designed to handle up to 160 arriving and departing passengers, a 1.8-kilometre runway, a fire and rescue station, aircraft and vehicle parking areas, as well as a kiosk.
Once completed, the airport is expected to improve accessibility to Mikumi National Park, potentially supporting increased tourist arrivals, tourism revenues and economic opportunities for communities surrounding the park.
TANAPA Orders Timely Completion
During an inspection of the project on September 17, 2026, Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Conservation Commissioner Massana Mwishawa directed the contractor, China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. Ltd (CHICO), to ensure that construction is completed on schedule and according to the required standards.
Commissioner Mwishawa also called on the Mikumi management team to ensure effective supervision of development projects while maintaining strong implementation of conservation and tourism activities within the park.
The directive highlights the importance of completing tourism infrastructure projects in a manner that delivers long-term benefits to both the national economy and communities living around protected areas.
38-Kilometre Road Project Reaches 80 Percent
During the same inspection, Commissioner Mwishawa reviewed rehabilitation works on the 38-kilometre road connecting Kikoboga Gate and Chamgore Gate.
The road project has reached approximately 80 percent completion and is being implemented through funding from the Tourism Development Levy (TDL), managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and implemented by TANAPA.
The improved road is expected to expand the tourism road network within Mikumi National Park and strengthen access between different entry points.
Connecting Mikumi With SGR Tourism
The development of the Kikoboga-Chamgore road is particularly significant because it will connect with the planned Chamgore Gate, located on the Kilosa side.
The new connection is expected to create an additional tourism access route for visitors arriving in Kilosa through the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), providing an opportunity to combine rail travel with wildlife experiences in Mikumi National Park.
This could strengthen the integration of rail transport, aviation and wildlife tourism, giving visitors more options for reaching the park while supporting the development of tourism circuits in eastern Tanzania.

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania's prominent wildlife destinations in the eastern tourism circuit. Its relatively accessible location makes it an important destination for visitors seeking wildlife experiences within a shorter travel period.
