FIFA DELEGATION DISCOVERS THE HISTORIC CHARM OF ZANZIBAR'S STONE TOWN

Zanzibar, Tanzania – A delegation from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has explored the rich cultural and historical heritage of Zanzibar, demonstrating how international sporting activities continue to create new opportunities for tourism promotion and destination marketing.

The delegation, led by Mr. Callum Irving, toured several of Stone Town's most iconic attractions following the successful completion of a FIFA-organized football coaching training programme in Zanzibar.

The visit was organized in collaboration with the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) and the Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF) as part of efforts to showcase Zanzibar's unique tourism offerings to international visitors and strengthen the connection between sports and tourism.

Sports Creating New Tourism Opportunities

The visit highlighted the growing role of sports as a catalyst for tourism development, with international sporting events and training programmes increasingly serving as platforms to introduce visitors to Tanzania's diverse cultural, historical, and natural attractions.

During their stay, members of the FIFA delegation explored the narrow streets and centuries-old architecture of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its unique blend of African, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences.

The delegates experienced Zanzibar's rich cultural identity while visiting historical landmarks, heritage buildings, bustling markets, and vibrant public spaces that continue to attract thousands of international visitors every year.

Promoting Zanzibar as a World-Class Destination

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism noted that familiarization visits by international organizations play an important role in expanding global awareness of Zanzibar as more than just a beach destination.

In addition to its world-famous white sand beaches and turquoise waters, Zanzibar offers visitors a remarkable combination of cultural heritage, history, cuisine, architecture, music, and authentic Swahili traditions.

By integrating tourism experiences into international conferences, sporting activities, and professional exchanges, Zanzibar continues to diversify its tourism products while attracting new visitor markets.

Strengthening Partnerships Between Tourism and Sports

The collaboration between FIFA, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, and the Zanzibar Football Federation reflects the growing recognition that sports tourism can contribute significantly to destination branding and economic development.

International delegates often extend their stay to explore local attractions, generating additional business for hotels, restaurants, transport providers, tour operators, cultural sites, and community-based tourism enterprises.

Such initiatives support Zanzibar's broader strategy of positioning itself as a leading destination for international sporting events, conferences, and cultural experiences.

Stone Town Remains a Cultural Treasure

Recognized as one of East Africa's most significant heritage destinations, Stone Town continues to captivate visitors with its historic buildings, carved wooden doors, ancient forts, museums, vibrant markets, and rich multicultural history.

The destination offers travellers a unique opportunity to discover centuries of maritime trade, Swahili civilization, and cultural exchange that shaped the Indian Ocean region.

The FIFA delegation's visit further reinforces Stone Town's reputation as a must-visit destination for international guests seeking authentic cultural experiences alongside world-class sporting engagements.

Advancing Zanzibar's Tourism Vision

As Zanzibar continues expanding its international partnerships, integrating tourism with sports, culture, and education remains an important strategy for attracting high-value visitors and extending their length of stay.
