ARUSHA : Arusha Region is set to make history with the launch of the first-ever Arusha Tourism Marathon, a unique sporting and tourism event that will take place inside one of Tanzania’s most iconic conservation areas.
Scheduled for 5th to 7th June 2026, the maiden edition will be staged at the scenic base of Mount Meru, bringing together sport, nature, and adventure in a single experience inside Arusha National Park.
🏃♂️ Running Through the Wild
For the first time, athletes will compete directly inside the national park, with race routes passing through protected landscapes and wildlife-rich terrain. The event will feature:
- 21KM Half Marathon
- 10KM Competitive Race
- 5KM Fun Run
- 2.5KM Children’s Race
Organizers say the main route will start at Ngongongare Gate, pass through Momella area, and loop back to the finish line—all within the park boundaries.
🌍 Over 2,500 Athletes Expected
More than 2,500 runners have already confirmed participation, with over 30% expected from international countries.
Participants are anticipated from:
- Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda
- United States, Malaysia
- And additional countries still registering as the window remains open
According to event organizer Cornell Evarist Magoti, the marathon is attracting growing global interest due to its unique “run-in-the-wild” concept.
🐘 Sport Meets Adventure Tourism
Beyond running, the festival will include a full tourism experience featuring:
- Horseback riding
- Canoeing at Momella Lakes
- Cycling adventures
- Nature and wildlife viewing
Organizers say the choice of Arusha National Park is intentional due to its safe terrain, existing adventure activities, and unmatched scenery, including waterfalls, volcanic craters, forest landscapes, and views of Mount Meru.
🎯 Annual Tourism Flagship Event
The Arusha Tourism Marathon is planned to become an annual fixture, strengthening Tanzania’s sports tourism sector and positioning Arusha as a regional hub for adventure events ahead of major continental activities, including preparations linked to the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.
Magoti emphasized that the event will not only promote fitness but also showcase Tanzania’s natural heritage to the world in a new and immersive way.
🌿 “This is more than a race—it is a celebration of nature, sport, and tourism in one of Africa’s most beautiful landscapes,” organizers noted.
